A gap on a CV can trigger an easy assumption: this candidate is risky, unreliable or less committed. That assumption can cost employers good people.

Career breaks happen for all sorts of ordinary reasons. Redundancy, caring responsibilities, illness, travel, further study or simply a difficult job market can all leave blank space on a CV. None of them tells you how capable someone is now.

Gaps are the single most common thing screening surfaces. In Veremark's 2025 data, an unexplained employment gap flags 51.7% of the time, more than any other check. Most of those reconcile the moment the candidate explains them. A few don't, and that's the point of asking.

An unaccounted period can be nothing, or it can be an omitted employer, a role someone left under a cloud, or dates that don't line up with what they claimed elsewhere. You can't tell which from the CV alone, and skimming a timeline by eye misses most of it.

A CV gap is not a red flag

Most gaps have a good reason: caring and parental leave, health and recovery, study and retraining, redundancy, travel or time spent self-employed. Treating a gap as a mark against someone drives good candidates away and risks discriminating against carers, people with health conditions and anyone whose career hasn't run in a straight line.

What you should do instead

A CV gap check isn't there to screen people out. It's there to complete the picture, give the candidate the chance to explain in their own words, and record it, so a hiring manager isn't left filling the blank with assumptions.

Instead of treating the gap itself as a warning sign, employers should look at what sits behind it. The useful question is not “Why weren’t you working?” It is “Is there anything here that affects this person’s suitability, experience or trustworthiness for the role?”

That distinction matters. A CV gap is something to investigate fairly, not a reason to reject someone before the conversation has even started.

What a CV gap check covers

It maps the candidate's employment history, identifies any period that isn't professionally accounted for, asks the candidate to explain it, and puts that explanation on the record alongside the timeline. It works best paired with reference and employment checks, which confirm the roles either side of the gap.

When a CV gap is worth a second look

A single explained gap is usually the end of it. Worth a closer look: a gap the candidate can't or won't account for, an explanation that doesn't match what a reference says, or overlapping dates that suggest a role has been added or moved to paper over a period. The check turns 'we didn't ask' into 'we asked, and here's the answer', which is exactly what you want on file if a hire is ever questioned.

Here's how Veremark runs CV gap checks

Once you've signed up and logged in to your Veremark account, you select the CV gap check and set the history to map, alongside your reference and employment checks.

Veremark maps the timeline, flags any unaccounted period, and asks the candidate to explain it.

You get a clear timeline with each gap and the candidate's explanation recorded against it.

It's GDPR and PDPA compliant, pay-as-you-go with no lock-in, and comes with 24/7 support, run on its own or as part of a wider background check.

Don't reject candidates for CV gaps. Investigate instead

A CV gap check completes the employment timeline and captures the candidate's side of it, so a gap becomes a fact you understand rather than a blank you worry about. Handled well it protects good candidates as much as the employer. Veremark runs it fairly, quickly, and alongside the checks that confirm the rest of the history.
