AI has made the perfect CV almost worthless: so how do you find the real players?
A polished CV used to tell us something about a candidate. Today, it may tell us more about their choice of AI tool. That is why we need to verify the person, their experience and their identity before we hand over access to the business.
There was a time when a well-written CV felt reassuring.
The dates lined up. The achievements sounded credible. The candidate had even used the right font. Excellent. Put them through to interview.
That approach now feels rather optimistic.
Generative AI can produce a tailored CV in seconds. It can rewrite modest experience into something far more impressive, match a candidate’s wording to the job description and prepare polished answers for the interview. It can also help someone maintain a false identity across an entire recruitment process.
The result is simple: a good application is no longer strong evidence of a good applicant.
A convincing CV is still only a set of claims
We need to remember what a CV actually is. It is information supplied by the candidate.
That information may be accurate. It may be exaggerated. It may have been assembled by a chatbot at 11.47 pm after the applicant pasted in the job advert.
AI recruitment fraud makes false applications easier to produce and easier to repeat. A dishonest applicant can create several versions of the same CV, adapt each one to a different role and prepare consistent answers for likely interview questions.
Consistency used to build confidence. Now it may simply mean the same tool wrote everything.
That does not mean we should dismiss every polished applicant. It means we should stop confusing presentation with proof.
An employment history check can confirm whether previous employers, positions and dates are genuine. An identity check can help establish whether the person applying is the person named in the application.
Those checks give us something a beautifully formatted CV cannot: independent evidence.

The scale of the threat has changed
This is no longer limited to the occasional candidate adding a few months to a previous role.
In July 2026, The Times reported that more than 700 suspected North Korean bots had tried to secure remote jobs at a major UK bank during June.
Pause on that number for a moment.
More than 700 suspected attempts against one employer in one month.
The reported candidates used polished CVs, credible technical answers and convincing video interviews. The aim may have been to secure legitimate access to company systems and data.
That is what makes AI recruitment fraud a business-security issue. A successful applicant may receive a laptop, an email account and system permissions without needing to breach a single firewall.
We would never give an unknown person access to sensitive systems because they wrote us a persuasive email. Yet a persuasive CV can sometimes produce much the same result.
A bad hire can be painfully expensive
Even an ordinary hiring mistake can carry a substantial cost.
The Recruitment and Employment Confederation has estimated that a poor mid-level hire earning £42,000 could cost a business more than £132,000 once recruitment, training, lost productivity and replacement costs are considered.
That is the relatively tidy version.
A fraudulent hire may also trigger an internal investigation, legal costs, incident response, regulatory reporting and customer losses. The employer may need to review every account, device and dataset the employee touched.
Suddenly, the cost of the original recruitment campaign looks like the least of the problem.

We need to verify earlier
We should treat CVs as a starting point for a conversation. We should not treat them as evidence.
Before a new employee receives access to the business, we need to know that the identity is real, the experience is accurate and the qualifications belong to the person presenting them.
Our guide to employment background checks explains the different checks employers can use to confirm candidate information.
AI recruitment fraud has made applications look better. It has not made them more reliable.
That means our hiring decisions need to rest on verified facts rather than polished sentences, even very polished sentences with excellent bullet-point alignment.

In a competitive marketplace, making the right hiring decisions is key to the success of your company. Employment background checks enables you to understand more about your candidates before making crucial decisions which can have either beneficial or catastrophic effects on your business.
Background checks not only provide useful insights into a candidate’s work history, skills and education, but they can also offer richer detail into someone’s personality and character traits. This gives you a huge advantage when considering who to hire. Background checking also ensures that candidates are legally allowed to carry out certain roles, failed criminal and credit checks could prevent them from working with vulnerable people or in a financial function.
